Chronic Bronchitis
- Definition: A chronic inflammatory condition of the bronchial tubes (airways), characterized by excessive mucus production and a persistent cough.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Persistent, productive cough (produces mucus) lasting at least three months per year for two consecutive years.
- Excessive mucus production (thick and may appear yellowish or greenish)
- Frequent respiratory infections
- Wheezing and noisy breathing
- Shortness of breath, especially during activity
- Cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin and lips) due to low oxygen levels (“blue bloaters”).
- Swollen legs and ankles (due to fluid retention and heart strain in advanced cases)
- Fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance.
Causes:
- Smoking: Primary cause, as it irritates and inflames the bronchial tubes.
- Chronic exposure to airborne irritants: Dust, pollution, or fumes.
